Your interview

You never get a second chance to make a first impression. This is your opportunity to impress your potential employer and to really sell yourself.

Here is some advice on how to prepare and tips on how to succeed in that all important first meeting.

Prepare yourself

Interviews are two way meetings. Not only are they an opportunity for the interviewer to find out about you and if you are suitable for the position, but they are also an opportunity for you to find out about the organisation and if the position will provide you with the challenge and satisfaction you are looking for.

Do your homework

It is vital to find out as much as possible about the company prior to the interview. A good place to start is their website, local advertising, annual reports or the companies brochures or leaflets.

Dress code and appearance

Smart business attire is a must, ensure you are well groomed with tidy hair, clean shoes and clothing. Do not wear too much perfume or aftershave and keep make-up, jewellery and nail polish simple. If you are taking papers to the interview, carry them in a suitable case or folder.

Travel and timing

Ensure you arrive a few minutes early and allow for a possible hold up, you do not want to rush in out of breath. Make sure you have the telephone number of the company in case of a major delay, or call us and we will advise the company on your behalf.

Communication

An interview is a two way meeting, make sure the employer knows the benefits of employing you. It is important to sell yourself by explaining details of relevant skills and experience that you can contribute to the organisation. Show that you have done your research, but try not to monopolise the meeting - let your interviewer talk. It is important that you are confident in the interview, ask the right questions and actively take part in discussions. Ensure that you can talk confidently about what is written on your CV. Prepare questions to ask at the interview, but save the ones relating to salary and benefits package for a second interview or until a job offer is made.

Simple things to remember

Practice a strong positive handshake and plan your greeting.
Remember to smile and be polite to all the staff you meet.
Unless you feel particularly comfortable, do not accept tea or coffee at the interview as it can get in the way.

Do not exaggerate.

If you are really interested in the position, tell the interviewer.
Don't be negative, especially about previous employers.
Relax and try to enjoy the experience.

Please remember to call us after your interview to discuss your thoughts on how it went. We will endeavour to get feedback from the company to you as soon as possible.

Good Luck!
